Danish Spicy Red Cabbage

2-3 heads red cabbage
2 onions
4 tart apples
3/4 C. cider vinegar
1/2 – 1 C. brown sugar
butter
6 cloves
1 bay leaf
3 grains allspice
salt
1-2 C. red wine or cranberry juice

Shred cabbage, slice onions, saute.  Add quartered apples, spices, sugar, & vinegar to taste.  Add wine or juice to moisten thoroughly.  Simmer until tender, about 1 1/2 hours.
