“A nice fellow checks into an expensive suite in New York City’s finest hotel, precipitating a fantastic nightmare involving a Salman Rushdie-type author, an Iranian terrorist, a vile wife from hell, a conniving bellboy, an incompetent F.B.I. agent, a nubile celebrity mad maid, a dimwitted secretary, and a little pigtailed girl.”

For millennia, in the depths of the darkness of winter, people have celebrated the return of the light. This year, the news is full of darkness – many wrongs against our first principle, the worth and dignity of every person. Many of us are tempted to despair.

Bring a candle, your hopes and fears, and one step you can take to right a wrong, to share or to contemplate silently, and we will celebrate hope and the inevitable return of the light.

1 in 4 – A Public Reading of a New Play

“1 In 4” refers to the proportion of college women in the United States who will be sexually assaulted before they graduate. The play follows the experiences of four women

This event is free and open to the public.

Church — What Is It Good For?

For me the essence of Unitarian Universalism is the responsible search for my personal spiritual truth in a loving and supportive community that values that search. The analogy I use is the campfire or hearth. When the cold, existential winds of the uncaring universe blew hard and bitter, it was all that was between our ancestors and the outer darkness. But it was enough, and they thrived. It was the center of life. Children heard the stories of the people from the elders. How to find food was discussed. Strangers were welcomed around the flame. We learned to take care of the weak and infirm, the young and helpless, but also that if everyone did not tend the fire and fetch the wood, that there was no survival. For me our Chalice symbolizes that flame that was the center of community. Today, it is the center of where I find, explore and celebrate my own spiritual truth and continue to grow as a person of faith.

“Top Ten Reasons Liberal Religion Still Matters” – Visiting Unitarian Universalist minister, Don Rollins, will lead us in a look at why our great tradition still has something to say.

Rev. Don Rollins is in his 24th year as UU religious educator, musician, and minister. He recently returned to his native southern Ohio, where he works as a counselor for a juvenile court.

Join us on Sunday, 3 August, as we continue our celebration of the summer at the West Virginia State Wildlife Center (also known as French Creek Game Farm) at French Creek, WV — picnic, hiking, and native West Virginia animals.

We will meet in the picnic area south of the elk enclosure at eleven. Bring a picnic lunch to share. Note that WFUU has arranged group admission to the Wildlife Center — at the admission office just say you’re with the West Fork Unitarian Universalists group.
