This Sunday John Hall will explore the histotical connection between Unitarian Universalism and Buddhism.

Kenneth Leo Patton (August 25, 1911-December 25, 1994), identifed as one of the major poets and a prophet of contemporary liberal religion, was a voice for a poetic, naturalistic humanism at a time when most humanists were defining a religion of reason. Minister and scholar David Bumbaugh has summed up Patton’s work: “It was he who taught a monotone rationalism how to sing; it was he who taught a stumble-footed humanism how to dance; it was he who cried ‘Look!’ and taught our eyes to see the glory in the ordinary.”

We have Spiritual Outings on the third Sunday during the summer. This month, we will gather at Prickett’s Fort State Park at 11 a.m. for a short service in the graveyard, followed by a potluck picnic, conversation, and walking or a visit to the replica pioneer fort. The fort and restrooms are wheelchair-accessible.

Exciting Program for Middle Schoolers in Fairmont

We are excited to that Learning Options, Inc. is hosting MIT’s Zero Robotics Middle School Summer Program July 5th through August 15th.  If you know of someone in this age group, please direct them to our website immediately while spaces are still available.   We started with 20 spaces, and they are filling fast.

Details for ZERO Robotics from MIT

ZERO is designed for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students. During the course of the five-week summer program, team members will be introduced to programming, coding, space engineering, and more! Programming of SPHERES
(Synchronized, Position, Hold, Engage, Reorient,Experimental Satellites)

The program culminates in a tournament where winning teams’ SPHERES compete aboard the International Space Station (ISS). SPHERES will be seen in a live stream from the ISS, in action, based on the codes and programs written by the ZERO team.

The program will include 5 weeks of classes, Monday through Wednesday, 9:00am – 2:00pm, at The Learning Center facility in Fairmont, WV and will include one or more offsite visits to the NASA IV & V facility in Fairmont.

 LOI Robotics team will have two 10-member teams. (Only 20 available slots.)

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students are elligible to join the Learning Options ZERO robotics teams.

PS: Tuition assistance is currently available to residents of Harrison County, WV, through a grant from the Sacred Heart Children’s Charity. Details for applying can be found inside the registration form.

This is a great opportunity to celebrate the 3rd and 4th principle (3rd Principle: We believe that we should accept one another and keep on learning together. 4th Principle: We believe that each person must be free to search for what is true and right in life.) and be involved in the community.

First Baptist Church, 901 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, WV (across from McDonald’s)

The public is invited to attend this free event meant to create a foundation of mutual understanding and cooperation between these two historic religious traditions in a setting of genuine hospitality, a desire for learning and growth, and a context of peaceful cooperation.

Schedule:
From 10:00 a.m. to Noon a panel/public forum will discuss these items.
The panelists will include: Rev. Elise Neal (PCUSA/Reformed Tradition), Rev. Val Gittings (Baptist Tradition), Rev. Maria Wiblin (University Chaplain/Pastor), Dr. Michael Richards (United Methodist/Inter-Faith Traditions), and representatives from the Morgantown Islamic Center (Muslim). Mrs. Cathy Reed will be Forum Facilitator.

From noon to 1:00 p.m. lunch will be on a person’s own.

At 1:00 p.m. the 2014 PBS documentary “The Life of Muhammad” will be shown
