Sunday, May 19, 2019: Annual Meeting

Instead of our religious education hour and service this Sunday, we will have our annual meeting, starting at 10. Please bring a snack to share.

Annual Business Meeting. The annual business meeting shall be held each year on the third Sunday of May, to hear reports of officers and staff, to appoint new officers and committees, to adopt an annual budget, and to transact any other business that may properly come before the congregation.

Agenda

Treasurer’s Report

Election of Officers (Until the beginning of the church year after the membership reaches 15, the officers shall be the President, the Moderator, the Chair of Ministry and Oversight, and a Secretary/Treasurer, who will serve as the Board and Nominating Committee. The congregation as a whole will carry out the functions of the Committee on Ministry and Oversight.)

Bylaws Amendment. (These bylaws may be amended by consensus of the congregation after the amendment has been placed on the agenda for discussion at least three monthly business meetings, or fewer if there are more than sixty percent (60%) of the members present and there is unanimity.) Our Bylaws provide for an outside limited audit every year, which we have never done. We should consider whether we should remove that from the bylaws if we are not going to do it.

Sunday April 21, 2019: Flower Ceremony

Please bring flowers to share.  Whatever is blooming, or a twig in bud, is fine.

We will have our Flower Ceremony, which was created by Dr. Norbert Čapek for the Liberal Religious Fellowship he founded in Prague, then Czechoslavakia, in 1925, and which became the largest Unitarian Church in the world. He sought a ceremony that would celebrate love and community and the interdependent web of life and love among a new and diverse congregation drawn from many backgrounds, and which would be a celebration not tied to any older religious ceremonies, which many of his congregation had rejected. Nearly a hundred years later, it is celebrated by many Unitarian Universalist congregations everywhere.

Our services are Sundays at 11 a.m. at the Progressive Women’s Association Uptown Event Center, 305 Washington Ave. in downtown Clarksburg, behind the Courthouse. There is religious education children and adults 10 to 10:45 am, and a coffee gathering before the service. More about us.

Offering and Response   (Unison)

For the gifts which we have received—and the gifts which we, ourselves, are—may we be truly grateful. Yet more than that, may we be committed to using these gifts to make a difference in the world: to increase love and justice; to decrease hatred and oppression; to expand beloved community; to share, and to keep sharing, as long as ever we can. Amen.

Sunday, March 10, 2019: Saving Daylight

Sunset

Daylight Saving Time begins this Sunday, March 10 2019, when 2:00 a.m. is magically revealed to be 3:00 a.m., leaving an hour-long hole in the night. Please remember to set your clocks forward one hour on Saturday evening so you will be on time for all your important appointments during the coming weeks. At 11:00 on Sunday morning (which might feel more like 10:00), to acknowledge this miraculous day, Robert Helfer will ponder whether we can actually save daylight, and why we might want to.

Our services are Sundays at 11 a.m. at the Progressive Women’s Association Uptown Event Center, 305 Washington Ave. in downtown Clarksburg, behind the Courthouse. There are classes for children and adults 10 to 10:45 a.m., and a coffee gathering before the service. More about us.

From 10 to 10:45 a.m. we will be discussing “Faithful Stubbornness” and “Response to Peter Morales” from the book Centering: Navigating Race, Authenticity, and Power in Ministry.

We would love to have you come worship with us.

Children are welcome. There is childcare and an activity for young children during the service.

The building is wheelchair accessible, with an accessible restroom. You may park on the south side of the building, which is marked reserved for the PWA.

Sunday, March 3, 2019: Revelation Is Not Sealed

…the heretic, acquainted with loneliness, has nothing to offer but himself. He has no claim to present but that of his own soul, and its right to recognition. He is convinced that not through churches, or books, but men, does God speak His word and reveal His will. He does not deny that revelation has come to other men in earlier times, and that what they saw has become the precious tradition of a church, or the holy testimony of a Bible; but he insists that this “Revelation is not sealed; Answering unto man’s endeavor. Truth and right are still revealed.”

-John Haynes Holmes

Perhaps the greatest function of Unitarian Universalist congregations is the relief of the loneliness of the heretic. Lisa deGruyter will lead the service. [postponed from January]

Our services are Sundays at 11 a.m. at the Progressive Women’s Association Uptown Event Center, 305 Washington Ave. in downtown Clarksburg, behind the Courthouse. There are classes for children and adults 10 to 10:45 am, and a coffee gathering before the service. More about us.
