Loki’s Shocking Proclamation

My son shocked me, recently. He told me that except for his family and friends (including future friends) he hated everyone. To be fair, he is angry that his fellow humans are so casually destroying the Earth and its creatures in pursuit of their own greed or as a by-product of their convenience and apathy. Hearing this, I knew I had to teach him about love, and why we should never hate others.

Bible Verse/ Gift of Love

“If I could speak all the languages of earth and of angels, but didn’t love others, I would only be a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 If I had the gift of prophecy, and if I understood all of God’s secret plans and possessed all knowledge, and if I had such faith that I could move mountains, but didn’t love others, I would be nothing. 3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it;[a] but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.” – 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted.

How does this lesson of love apply to our principles as UUs?

Reading: “At the end of life we will not be judged by how many diplomas we have received, how much money we have made, how many great things we have done. We will be judged by ‘I was hungry and you gave me to eat, I was naked and you clothed me, I was homeless and you took me in.’

Hungry not only for bread — but hungry for love. Naked not only for clothing — but naked for human dignity and respect. Homeless not only for want of a room of bricks — but homeless because of rejection.” – Mother Teresa

Song: Get Together by The Young Bloods
Thomas Keating

Love is but a song we sing, fears’ the way we die
You can make the mountains ring or make the angels cry
Though the dove is on the wing and you may not know why

*Come on people now, smile on your brother
everybody get together, and try to love one another right now

Some may come and some may go, He will surely pass
When the one that left us here returns for us at last
We are but a moment’s sunlight fading in the grass

Chorus

If you hear the song I sing you will understand…(listen)
You hold the key to love and fear all in your trembling hand
Just one key unlocks them both Its there at your command

Chorus
